Westmeath County Council has refused planning permission for a new Lidl store in Baylough in Athlone on four grounds.
The German retailer has applied in June to develop a new store on the site of O’Meara’s garage which would have resulted in the demolition of the current building and three homes on the site as well as the construction for a car park with over 120 spaces.
Three submissions by local business people were made raising concerns over the project, including fears that the opening of a second Lidl store in the town would have a detrimental impact on local businesses.
Westmeath County Council claims that the size and scale of the plans would contravene the Athlone town Development plan while it would also have a negative visual impact on the locality.
Concerns over increased traffic congestion at the Roscommon road junction as well as the absence of a special traffic report were all highlighted as reasons for refusal.
Lidl can appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala.
