A number of streets on Athlone’s west side are to become one-way after a local councillors agreed to the proposal.
Westmeath County Council presented to members of the Athlone Moate Municipal District details of the proposal following a public consultation that took place earlier this year.
Under a recommendation brought before the local representatives, the one-way system will be in operation with Excise Street running from west to east; Grattan Row which will run from west to east, Abbey Lane which will north to south and Chapel Lane and Lyster Street running in the same direction.
The Council hopes the proposals will lead to increase safety at the Bastion Street/O’Connell Street and Chapel Street junctions as well as providing additional parking.
