Man recovering after Athlone river rescue

A young man had a miraculous escape after jumping into the Shannon in Athlone yesterday morning.

He leaped off the bridge shortly after 2am and gardaí immediately spotted him, shining their torches on him after positioning themselves on both banks. Gardaí say the local man, aged in his early twenties, was eager to be saved, but floated rapidly down the Shannon towards Burgess Park. Lough Ree RNLI saved him after he had drifted about 400 metres.

Stan Bradbury, of the RNLI, explains how they came to his aid. `
