Longford-Westmeath TD accuses government of seeking further cuts to Custume barracks

A Longford Westmeath TD has accused the government of planning to further downgrade the Irish Defence Forces presence at Custume Barracks in Athlone.

Robert Troy made the claim last night during a heated Dail debate on calls for pay to be restored to pre-crisis levels for army personnel.

He claimed that just 700 Irish Defence force personnel are now working from the Athlone barracks, down from a pre-recession high of 1100.
