Irish Water reveal why Portaneena water treatment plant plans were dropped

Irish Water says there were a number of factors that contributed to its decision to drop its plans for a new water source and treatment plant Killinure Lough in Athlone.

Following a review earlier this year, the utility has now decided that the best option for the current and future supply for the area is to carry out an upgrade of the existing water treatment plant at Custume Bridge

Irish Water will now progress plans to upgrade the existing Water Treatment Plant in Athlone.

Residents in the Ballykeeran area had strongly opposed the plans on environmental grounds and also objected to the proposed use of the only waterside local amenity for a water treatment plant.

Asset Planning Manager with Irish Water, Mark Macaulay says the proposal for Killenure was not a wasted exercise.
