Irish Rail says it simply does not have the carriages to to match capacity on all rail routes during the busy summer months.
Hundreds of passengers on the 09:45 Westport to Dublin route were left frustrated yesterday, nobody was able to board the train in Roscommon due to overcrowding and a bus service was provided from Athlone to Dublin.
The three carriage train was completely full soon after, with no standing room, until its arrival in Dublin.
Speaking on Let’s Talk today, Barry Kenny, Head of Irish Rail’s Corporate Communications said while they were aware of bookings, it was the number of turn ups on the day that wasn’t expected, he says they did did what they could to ease the pressure.
Barry says the problem has been created with a lack of investment for 10 years.
