Inland fisheries says no significant fish kill in Athlone

Inland Fisheries is confirming there hasn’t been a significant fish kill as a result of an oil spillage on the Al river in Athlone.

Officers are monitoring a half kilometre along the river with Westmeath County Council installing booms in the water as a containment measure.

Director of the Shannon River Basin District Amanda Mooney says that both agencies are investigating the source or sources of the spillage and are looking at a number of possible causes.

Ms Mooney says however they are satisfied that fish stocks in the area are largely unaffected.
