Members of the public are being invited to attend a special event in the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone tomorrow where they can meet inspectors from HIQA.
The event takes the form of roundtable discussions in a relaxed and informal setting, and it’s aimed at allowing residents of nursing homes and their relatives to give information to the inspectors about issues they may have concerns with.
HIQA routinely carry out announced and unannounced inspections at both private and public nursing homes but they say they understand that some residents and relatives don’t get a chance to talk to them during these inspections.
Tomorrows event in Athlone begins at half past two and residents, relatives, as well as members of the general public are encouraged to go and talk to the HIQA staff who will be there.
Susan Cliffe who’s Deputy Chief Inspector for Social Services with HIQA says they often have to tell people they can’t investigate individual complaints, but they can take the information on board and have a broader look at the concerns raised.
