Head of Midlands Simon says they may be forced to close emergency Athlone facility

The head of the Homeless charity Midlands Simon says they will have to shut their emergency accommodation in the Shannonside region, unless the government steps in to cover increasing costs

Chief executive Tony Riordan claims the six bed facility in Athlone, as well its six emergency beds in Tullamore, may have to close due to a major cash shortfall.

The Athlone facility currently covers the wider midlands region, including Longford, but is facing a funding shortfall of approximately 80,000 euro a year.


It currently costs 300 euro per day to run the service in Athlone- but Tony O’Riordan says the fact that they need to find €100k per year through fundraising is not sustainable.
