Gardai move into new accomodation beside old Athlone garda station

Athlone gardai have moved next door into what was formerly the old social welfare office on Barrack Street in Athlone on the west side of the town.

The move denotes the completion of Phase 1 of the €8.3 million euro contract to refurbish the old social welfare office, and the existing old garda station which dates back to 1947.

A number of historic artefacts were found during the work behind the barracks and social welfare office, but this wasn’t unexpected according to the authorities due to the proximity to Athlone castle.

The next phase of the project will involve the refurbishment of the existing garda barracks building and the two buildings will then be linked by a glass atrium.

It’s hoped the entire project will be finished by late next year, but in the meantime Sgt Andrew Haran says gardai are welcoming the move to much newer accommodation.
