Fears for Athlone air ambulance service unless pilots get pay boost

There are fears for the long term future of the aero-medical ambulance service from Athlone if air corps pilots do not received adequate remuneration.

The Irish Times has reported the ongoing shortage of pilots within the Defence Corps given the attractiveness of similar work within the private sector.

Former Chairperson of the Roscommon Hospital Action Committee John McDermott is working with a community funded charity hoping to provide a similar aeromedical service out of Cork to serve the southern region.

With pilots and a helicopter ready, they are waiting for the final go-ahead from the Department of Health to link into the emergency systems.

John McDermott told today’s Let’s Talk that the government need to act on the situation facing the shortage of pilots in the Defence forces now, rather than wait until the situation reaches crisis point.
