Farmers lose young pheasants and turkeys to the pine marten

A Westmeath councillor is renewing his call for the protection of the Pine Marten to be assessed.

Fine Gael Councillor Tom Farrell made his original call after a pine marten had entered a room in his house where young children were playing, but he says there are more and more reports of problems with other wildlife.

Councillor Farrell told Monday’s meeting of Athlone Municipal District that he hoped to be able to meet with the Minister responsible to discuss the matter in the coming weeks.

He says people out hunting have been reporting less birdlife generally, and he has been contacted by farmers about specific instances where the animal has killed young birds being reared for sale.

The Fine Gael councillor says there’s video evidence of these incidents and the facts can’t be refuted.
