Elliot sisters will be remembered in Athlone with renaming part of Grace Road

A ceremony took place yesterday to rename part of a road in Athlone in honour of two local sisters’ contributions to the Easter Rising.

Eilish and Emily Elliot from Glasson were founding members of Cumann Na mBan and took an active role in the Easter Rising, helping with dispatches and tending the wounded in both the GPO and the Four Courts.

Emily’s husband was Peter Ledwith from Legan Mt Temple – he was also an active member of the Rising – they settled in Dublin and had a grocery and confectionary business.

Ellie and her husband Seamus O’ Brien settled in Athlone and continued to be involved in politics both being founding members of Fianna Fail.

Yesterday’s renaming ceremony will see part of Grace Road renamed Elliot Road and was  organised by Westmeath County Council.
