Efforts are underway in Athlone to try and contain an oil spill which resulted in several swans requiring urgent treatment over the weekend.
A number of animals, including cormorants and signets were covered in oil in the incident on the River Shannon in an area known locally as the ‘Big Meadows’.
Some of the birds have been taken for special cleaning to an animal sanctuary in Kildare, while investigations are ongoing as to the source of the oil spill.
It’s understood that Westmeath County Council is also examining ways to clean up the scene but no Inland Fisheries has confirmed that no fish have died in the incident.
Billy Gallagher, welfare officer with Athlone SPCA told Shannonside FM the incident is very worrying
