Works on Church Street in the centre of Athlone town are to stop this weekend ahead of the busy Christmas period.
Major works and machinery will be gone by the 8th of December and the street will be fully open to pedestrians and traffic.
The council says some minor works such as the installation of bins, seating and lighting may happen on Church Street after next weekend but the impact will be minimal.
Yesterdays meeting of Athlone Municipal District hear words of praise for the contractors with members stating that most local businesses had been very happy with their co-operation over the duration of the €3 million euro scheme.
Westmeath Director of Services Barry Kehoe says the contractors will be coming back in January to finish the project and that will involve the installation of planters for up to a dozen trees at either end of the street, and a piece of street art on the new widened pavement at the North Gate street junction.
