Athlone’s air ambulance responded to almost 550 call outs this year

The air ambulance based at Custume Barracks in Athlone has responded to almost 550 call outs in the past year and has visited almost every county in the country.

The service was put into operation on a pilot basis in the midlands in 2012 after the closure of the emergency department at Roscommon hospital.

Since then it’s been credited with saving many people’s lives in the Shannonside region.

Captain Sean McCarthy from the Air Corps Press Office who has flown on the service for the past number of years says they have now completed over 3,000 missions.
