Athlone Mayor describes rise in River Shannon water levels as “frightening”

The Mayor of Athlone has described as “frightening ” the rapid rise in water level of the River Shannon in the last week.

Several areas in the Shannonside near the river are under water at the moment after very several heavy days and nights of rain in the last seven days.

Minister for the OPW Kevin Boxer Moran confirmed last night that Water levels at Lough Ree are up 50mm, Athlone downstream is up 70mm while Banagher is up 90mm.

He claimed in a Facebook post that while levels on Lough Allen had stabilised, over 150mm of rain has fallen in Athlone since the beginning of March.

It’s feared that once the water from flooded fields makes its way into the River Shannon, water level could rise even further, threatening homes and farms.

Councillor Frankie Keena told Shannonside FM that it’s a been a worrying few days for householders
