Athlone Mayor believes town is prepared for any possible flooding

The mayor of Athlone insists the town will be able to respond to a major flood episode if it occurs over the coming days.

Concern is growing that because of recent heavy rainfall, the water level in the town is now six inches higher than this day last week, while in Clonown, it is now 11 inches higher.

OPW Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran says his department is closely monitoring the situation along various points of the Shannon.

However, Athlone mayor Aengus O’Rourke insists the area is much better resourced this time and is confident there won’t be a repeat of the devastation of 2009 or the winter of 2015-16.
