Athlone March 17th committee chair to resign after personal abuse backlash over parade change

The chairperson of the Athlone St Patricks’ Parade committee has revealed that the decision to move the town’s parade to March 16th this year resulted in personal abuse being directed at several committee members.

The entire top table of the organising committee is due to resign at the AGM next week, after a backlash to the decision to switch the parade to Saturday March 16th this year, rather than sticking with the traditional national holiday.

Some traders in the town had expressed a concern that the parade would negatively affect business on one of the busiest weekends of the year, while others were broadly positive over the parade’s success.


Speaking on Let’s Talk this afternoon, Chairperson Caoimhe O’Connell claimed that while the backlash wasn’t the only reason for the committee resigning en-masse, it did play a key part in her own reason for leaving the role :
