Athlone Green party councillor Louise Heavin is denying suggestions that the party’s leadership contest will be a distraction from government negotiations.
She’s making the comments after reports that a spilt has emerged in the party over its leadership.
The Green party’s constitution states that the contest must take place within six months after a general election and Councillor Heavin says most members had believed the government would be formed before the contest took place.
The Athlone based councillor is also co-chair of the group of 49 local authority members of the party across the country and she says the real part of the contest won’t take place until after the government talks have finished.
She wouldn’t be drawn on who she’ll be supporting in the contest, saying it’s too early in the process.
