The Athlone Chamber of Commerce has welcomed news that over a quarter of a million litres of water a day is being saved in the town, but says it’s not enough on its own.
John McGrath has been reacting to a statement issued by Irish Water today saying that it’s now saving 250,000 litres of water a day in the town through its National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The statement says the work has supported a reduction in frequency of water restrictions being put in place in the town in recent months.
Mr McGrath says it’s good to hear that progress on the leakage issue has worked well, but he adds that other work is necessary as well.
Mr McGrath says the chamber has been told of an imminent project to fully address the water-supply challenges for Athlone and he says this must go ahead if there is to be an end of outages and interruptions to local businesses.
