Athlone Ambulance Service rejects suggestion they’re short on resources three nights a week

The National Ambulance Service is rejecting suggestions that there are three nights in the week when there is just one ambulance available in Athlone.

In response to a query from Shannonside News following criticism by a local councillor, the NAS says it can confirm there are two emergency ambulances rostered for duty each evening in Athlone.

Councillor John Dolan had said there was just one ambulance on duty on St Stephens night of last year but the ambulance service says it had two resources on duty in Athlone on the night.

The statement goes on to say that there were a high volume of calls over the Christmas period and that the service will always send the closest available ambulance to an emergency call.

It says that means that if the local ambulance is on a call, an ambulance from another area will respond to an emergency.

Councillor Dolan says one of the ambulances that attended calls in Athlone on St Stephen’s had come from Sligo.
