Anglers call for support for tomorrow’s protest on Lough Ree’s inner lakes water extraction plans

It’s hoped that Irish Water and Westmeath County Council will sit down with campaigners seeking to resolve issues surrounding the extraction of water from the inner lakes of Lough Ree.

Irish Water is planning to take 15 million litres of water from the inner lakes of Coosan Lough, Killenure Lough and Ballykeeran bay per day, based on an extraction order obtained by Westmeath County Council, which allows for the extraction up 41 million litres daily.

The Save Our Lakes group is concerned about the proposed point of extraction which is of better quality water and maintains special habitats and fish stocks.

A protest will take place at the Portnaneena amenity this Saturday at 2pm to raise awareness of the issues involved.

Athlone’s Martin McEnroe is President of the Angling Council of Ireland says the order which was obtained in 2007, is subject to new regulations.
