Accommodation for Athlone’s homeless expected to cost €750,000 per year

Westmeath County Council are expecting to spend almost three-quarters-of a million euro this year, or almost €14,000 per week, on providing emergency accommodation for people who are homeless in Athlone.

The figures were revealed in a response to a question from Councillor Aengus O Rourke at this month’s meeting of the Athlone-Moate M.D.

The Council also revealed that at present, ten families, comprising of fifteen adults and 25 children, as well as eight single people, are accessing emergency accommodation.

The local authority also revealed to Councillor O’Rourke that it spent half-a million-euro on emergency accommodation last year, and one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand euro in 2017.
