It’s hoped that work on a 50-bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital will begin in early 2020.
Minister of Health Simon Harris visited the site last week and formally announced the funding for the project.
The hospital’s Senior Clinical Team gave the Minister a tour of some of the more challenging 6-8 bed wards in the hospital, which date back to the 1940s, as well as the lack of toilet and shower facilities.
The funding is part of the recently announced HSE Capital Plan 2019 – 2021.
Planning for the unit has been in place since 2016, and now that the project has moved to tenders stage it’s hoped to be completed by 2022.
