A new era for cancer care in the Shannonside region will begin today with the turning of the sod for a multi-million euro facility in Roscommon.
After years of fundraising, work is due to begin in the coming days on the long-awaited Mayo-Roscommon Hospice.
The eight suite centre will be developed on a site beside Hannon’s hotel at a cost estimated at €6million.
However, it’s hoped that tenders received will mean that a bank loan will not be needed.
Care will include the most up to date holistic as well as medical support and the building will include suites complete with private outdoor spaces for each resident whether they are receiving long term illness or end of life care.
The estimated date for completion is January 2021 when funding from the HSE to support services at the centre will be made available.
An official sod turning event is due to get underway at 2pm this afternoon with work on site set to begin almost immediately.
