Tributes continue to be paid to former Roscommon footballer Liam Gilmartin who died over the weekend.
The former midfielder was the last surviving member of the 1943/44 Roscommon football team – the last side to lift Sam Maguire for the county. He passed away over the weekend at the age of 97 in Dublin, where he had been living for a number of years.
The midfielder was the captain when the county won its first ever minor in 1939 but his career was cut-short in 1945 after he contracted TB while stationed as a Garda near Croke Park. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, Roscommon GAA historian Tony Conboy said it was ironic that despite suffering such a terrible blow to his health,he lived such a long life.
