The Minister for Education has said the issue of the loss of teachers at small rural schools due to falling pupil numbers is out of his hands.
He made his comments in response to the situation at Tisrara NS in Roscommon, which is facing losing a teacher in September.
In recent days, the plight of the school was been highlighted by local Fianna Fail Deputy Eugene Murphy in the Dail.
The TD said that if the third teacher isn’t retained at Tisrara, it would be “devastating” for the local community.
Speaking on a visit to Leitrim this week, Minister Joe McHugh said that the process in determining teacher numbers is entirely independent.
