Thousands without power as Ophelia hits hard in Shannonside region

The northern half of the country is on high alert as Ophelia continues to lash Ireland.

Up to half a million households could be without power in the next few hours.

Public transport has been cancelled for the rest of the day, and schools will remain shut tomorrow.

Thousands of homes across the Shannonside region are without electricity this evening, and they may face an anxious wait to have power restored.

There is over four thousand people in Athlone without power – with over eleven hundred without power in Bushfield.

424 people near Lanesborough are without electricity and there is power out in Ballinlough and Glenamaddy where 1200 people are without electricity this evening and 1,123 ESB customers are in the darkness in Ballygar.

In Longford over twelve-hundred people are without electricity and 405 between Legga and Ballinamuck are cut off due to the storm.

708 homes in Ballinalee are in the dark while approximately 150 people are without electricity in Ballinasloe.

In Leitrim 1,700 homes in Carrick-on-Shannon, 753 in Carigallen and 385 in Mohill are without power.
