Thosands of local hospital bed days lost due to delayed discharges

Thousands of ‘bed days’ have been lost at hospitals across the Shannonside region so far this year as a direct result of delayed discharges.

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/Galway Eugene Murphy claims the figures show that ‘the level of support being provided to mainly older patients is simply not good enough’

According to the HSE, a patient is classified as a delayed discharge when they no longer need to be in acute hospital setting but have no access to appropriate step down care.

During the first six months of this year, almost four thousand bed days were lost at University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park while just under one thousand were lost at Roscommon hospital.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe lost 597 bed days during the same time period, while just under 2 thousand 200 days were lost collectively at Mullingar and Tullamore hospitals.
