There needs to be a rethink on close forestry can be planted to houses in Ireland. That's according to Roscommon Galway Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice

There needs to be a rethink on close forestry can be planted to houses in Ireland.

That's according to Roscommon Galway Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice who's making the comments after a major bog fire in Creggs last night.

The fire is understood to have broken out around half past eight yesterday evening and it wasn't brought under control until the early hours of this morning.bog

Very dry conditions and strong winds led to widespread destruction of the bog land and it's understood several hundred acres were destroyed.

Local TD Michael Fitzmaurice who was at the scene last night said while no houses were under direct threat at any time, it was frightening at how fast the fire was travelling in strong winds.

He said there needs to be a rethink about a safe distance when it comes to forestry and houses:
