Tarmonbarry publican pulls out of trade after burglaries

A Tarmonbarry publican says he felt he had no option but to stop trading over the Christmas holiday after being the victim of a number of burglaries over the past year.

Stephen McGuinness had taken over the operation of the Shannon Bar in the village for the past 17 months but after numerous incidents including the theft of several kegs of beer last October, he said he had decided to cease trading on New Year’s night.

Speaking on Let’s Talk today, Stephen Mc Guinness said he believes he was targeted by a gang who were also prepared to steal from his home and he was not prepared to let his family face danger.

He says a lot of small businesses fell very frustrated about the leniency of sentencing and lack of any real deterrent for the gangs carrying out rural crime.
