A Shannonside TD has claimed that farmers and shoppers are being “fleeced” when it comes to beef prices.
Independent deputy Denis Naughten says that while consumers are paying high prices, farmers are not getting the benefit.
Separately, he claims that the situation has worsened considerably over the past 15 years.
The Roscommon deputy carried out a survey which found that the share farmers get from beef production has dropped from 42% in 2005 to 31% today.
He revealed that according to the survey, the supermarket mark-up on round roast beef was 135% back then, but this has now rocketed to 218%.
Deputy Naughten said that this clearly highlights the reason why the suckler beef herd sector is struggling.
