Shannonside councils have paid private landlords almost €18 million in rent over the past four years.
Roscommon County Council had by far the highest bill of the three local authorities, at €9.5 million.
Details released under the Freedom of Information Act show the three Shannonside local authorities have paid €17.87 million to landlords for rent for people in private-rental accommodation since 2015.
This is mainly been made up of payments under the Rental Accommodation Scheme (Ras).
In total, Roscommon County Council paid more than €2.4 million in 2015, 2016 and 2017, while the bill for the first 11 months of 2018 was almost €2.2 million.
Longford council’s total bill across the same period was nearly €6.3 million, with €4.5 million under Ras and €1.8 million under leases.
In Leitrim, the local authority paid landlords €2.1 million, with €1.9 million for Ras and €220,000 for leases.
