Saolta denies month’s delay for Leitrim blood tests

The Saolta group has denied that blood-test results in Leitrim are being delayed by up to a month.

A GP in the county last week placed a notice on his surgery, advising patients of such a delay because of staff shortages in Sligo University Hospital.

The Saolta group, which manages the hospital, confirms it wrote to all GPs in the area last week to advise of an issue.

It says the increasing volume of samples being received from GPs and audits had shown that inappropriate tests are being performed routinely.

Saolta advises that, as a result, a number of tests will no longer be processed unless accompanied by relevant clinical details.

But it says there won’t be delays of up to a month, with the turnaround-time being two to four days.
