Roscommon TD concerned at failure to spend rural development funds

Almost €600,000 euro in allocations to Shannonside counties for rural development schemes in 2016 had not been spent up until April this year.

Over €400,000 euro of that is accounted for by an underspend in Leitrim under the Rural Recreational Scheme.

According to figures released to Fianna Fail, Roscommon County Council had not spent almost €59,700 (€59,668) of the €380,000 Town and Village scheme.

It received over €406,000 under CLAR but had not spent just over €54,000 (€54,055) of that allocation.

Longford County Council was awarded €350,000 euro in REDZ funding in 2016, but just over €19,400 (19,412) was unspent by April and it has also not spent just over just over €5,170 (5,177) of a €237,000 CLAR alloccation.

Of the €300,000 of grant aid through REDZ, Leitrim County Council has not spent over €58,340 (€58,341)

Of all the schemes and awards though, the fact that 83% or €401,354 of Leitrim’s €480,000 grant under the Rural Recreational Scheme was not spent is surpriising.

Shannonside FM news has requested an explanation from the local authority on the matter.

Roscommon Galway Fianna Fail TD Eugene Murphy is calling on Minister Michael Ring to liaise with the local authorities and insisting that this money is spent or demand that it is returned to the Department so that it can be redistributed to other areas.
