Roscommon could still lose out badly under boundary legislation

People in Roscommon are being misled in relation to plans by Fine Gael to legally enshrine county boundaries.

That’s according to Roscommon Independent Councillor Lawrence Fallon who says he understands that the plans being talked about will safeguard addresses, but not who controls a certain area.

The Athlone Boundary Review Committee was established in recent years to look at whether or not it was necessary to move 30 sq kilometres of Co Roscommon into the Athlone area to facilitate the development of the town in future years.

The proposals caused uproar in Roscommon at the time and a Save Roscommon group was set up to campaign on the issue.

A report last year recommended that the county’s stay as they are, but that the local councils should work together where necessary.

Councillor Fallon says that while people in Roscommon might feel there is not threat left anyone, he’s very concerned that new plans to legislate on the issue would not safeguard the county’s assets.
