Roscommon senator calls for special debate on new programme of de-centralisation

A Roscommon senator has called for a debate about a new programme of de-centralisation which could see more government offices re-located to the Shannonside region.

Last week it was reported that OPW Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran was calling for a review in this month’s Budget for a de-centralisation scheme to examine bringing more government offices to areas such as Sligo and Athlone.

A Fianna Fail led government previously re-located a number of government departments and offices to the region, such as the Irish Prison Service which is now based in Longford and the land registry which is located in Roscommon.

Senator Terry Leyden believes there is merit to the Minister’s proposal and Roscommon could prove an ideal location if more civil servants were to be moved away from Dublin:
