Roscommon senator calls on government to purchase Lough Key island and castle

A Roscommon senator has called on the government to purchase a historic island in the middle of Lough Key, which also includes its own castle.

McDermott’s Castle on Lough Key and its surrounds is going under the hammer at an online auction this month, with a guide price of €90,000.

The picturesque setting is beloved of visitors to the Shannonside region and is widely rated as one of the most unique tourist attractions in all of Ireland.

Senator Frank Feighan told the Seanad recently that instead of the island being sold to a private bidder, he believes the state should purchase it.

He claims that the poet and writer W.B Yeats even tried to buy the island in the late 19th century and that all efforts should be made to buy it to preserve its historical significance
