Roscommon records major drop in the numbers availing of HPV vaccine

Roscommon is one of the counties which has seen a major fall-off in the take-up of the HPV vaccine which protects against cervical cancer.

When the vaccine was first introduced in 2010 the take-up was in the 80% range, but that has been falling to a low of 50% in many areas last year.


Medical experts have been coming together in the past year to combat what they say are unfounded fears about the vaccine and the HSE’s National Immunisation Office says provisional figures taken since last September show an average increase of 11%.

Speaking on Let’s Talk today Dr Brenda Corcoran who heads the Immunisation office says that they are happy with the increase in take-up, but they recognise that work still has to be done to ensure more parents allow their daughters to be vaccinated….
