Co. Roscommon saw the largest percentage increase in the number of primary school pupils in the entire country last year.
Roscommon and Sligo are bucking a trend which is showing that primary school numbers went down in several western counties last year, with Roscommon recording the highest percentage increase in the country at 2 per cent.
The county also has the smallest schools in the country with an average of 86 pupils each.
There were 155 more children attending primary school in Roscommon last year while the numbers in Sligo increased by 144.
Leitrim remained the same with no increase or decrease in primary school pupil numbers last year according to the latest information from the Department of Education.
Primary schools in Longford saw an increase of 95 pupils last year.
