Roscommon gardai want clarity on evictions

A call is to be made at the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors today for clearer rules for gardai who are called in by the sheriff when carrying out evictions.

The Irish Times is reporting today that the forces middle managers in the Roscommon garda division where a contentious eviction took place late last year want a policy document compiled and published so the role of garda members is defined and made public.

Gardai are understood to want the association to take up the matter with Commissioner Drew Harris and ask him to draw up a policy around gardai being involved in an enforcement party assembled by a sheriff.

The Minister for Justice has already committed to bringing security personnel carrying out evictions or enforcing other court order within the remit of the private security authority.
