A young midlands couple are encouraging people to think of organ donation as they recover from the ultimate gift of love which happened for them a few weeks ago.

29 year old garda Shane Hunter, originally from Roscommon, donated a kidney to his wife-to-be Briona Reynolds just two weeks ago and both are recovering well from the surgery.

Briona learned that she had kidney disease five years ago but couldn't have known at that time that her boyfriend and future husband would ultimately end up giving her the ultimate gift.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning Briona revealed that both Shane and her mother had tested as viable options to donate a kidney to her.

Shane says that it was great to be able to do something for Briona after years of watching her cope with her condition.

He said he also thought it was the best option for him to go first and to leave Briona's mother in reserve in case all didn't go as well as hoped.
