The Fine Gael selection convention for the Roscommon Galway constituency is to take place in Roscommon town tonight.
The event is to be chaired by Longford Westmeath Deputy Peter Burke and it will start at eight o’ clock tonight in Gleeson’s Town House in Roscommon.
A total of almost 600 Fine Gael delegates will be eligible to vote at tonight’s convention which is being held for the new Roscommon Galway constituency.
The new constituency takes in even more of Co Galway that the present one, and tonight a Ballinasloe councillor will be making his case that the party has to choose a running mate from that county, as well as Roscommon Senator Maura Hopkins.
Councillor Michael Finnerty and Senator Hopkins are the only two nominees before tonight’s event, but there’s no indication as yet as to whether a directive will be issued to choose one or two candidates, or to choose one tonight with the option of adding another at a later time.
It’s understood that around 200 of the delegates eligible to vote tonight are from the Galway end of the constituency, with the remainder from Co Roscommon.
