Roscommon councillor Orla Leyden says she would not agree to be automatically selected as an election candidate as part of Fianna Fail gender quota strategy.

The Fianna Fail councillor who has served for the past 14 years on the local authority, and who currently holds the position of Cathaoirleach says that she wants to contest any convention in her own right.

Councillor Leyden revealed on the Let’s Talk show today that since taking up the main position on the council she has grown in confidence in her ability to take on a challenging role while still maintaining a good family life.

She says it’s that experience of recent months which has led to her decision to seek a nomination at the next convention.

Councillor Leyden was also asked if she would consider being automatically selected as a candidate if that option was to be put in front of her.
