A Roscommon councillor says services such as the endoscopy unit at Roscommon University Hospital can help save lives.
Councillor Marty Mc Dermott is appealing to the public to go to their local GP if they are experiencing any changes in their digestive or bowel movements.
The bowel screening service began in Roscommon in 2014 with the endoscopy unit opened in 2016, with over 4,000 procedures conducted each year.
Councillor Mc Dermott says it's especially important when there is a family history of certain conditions as he has experience of within his own family.
