Roscommon council members hear from presidential hopefuls today

Up to nine presidential hopefuls are set to address councillors in Roscommon this afternoon

Sean Gallagher will make his second appearance in three days at a Shannonside local authority meeting while it will be the first time the region will get to hear from hopefuls such as Senator Joan Freeman and journalist Gemma O’Doherty.

Councillors in Roscommon will get a chance to hear from almost everyone who is interested in running for president this afternoon as Aras an Chontae with seven guaranteed attendees seeking a nomination.

Athlone woman Marie Goretti Moylan has confirmed her attendance, while fellow Roscommon native John Groarke is still a doubt.

Artist Kevin Sharkey may also be a late addition to the seven strong confirmed line up to face councillors in the chamber.

They include Petr Casey, Patrick Feeney, Senator Joan freeman, Sean Gallagher, Sarah Louise mulligan, and journalist Gemma O’Doherty.

Last night it appeared that Sean Gallagher has taken at least one step towards challenging Michael D Higgins as a candidate after Leitrim county council confirmed three motions in favour of supporting him have been lodged by three councillors from Fianna Fail Councillor Mary Bohan, Fine Gael’s John McCartin and Independent Enda Stenson

Leitrim will decide next Monday, while a formal resolution cannot be made today in Roscommon, but nominations will be accepted and a date agreed to vote on nominee(s).

Action gets underway at Aras an Chontae from 2.30pm.
