Roscommon Cllr. calls for amendment to Mercosur deal

A Roscommon farmer and councillor who took part in the farmers protest at the Dail today today claims there is a way to lessen the effect of the Mercosur deal.

Laurence Fallon is calling for an amendment to the controversial EU trade deal which he believes could help alleviate the situation for Irish farmers.

The independent councillor was speaking after thousands of farmers held a demonstration, organised by the Beef Plan Movement, which claims the deal will cripple struggling farm incomes.

It’s estimated that hundreds of farmers from this region attended the protest to highlight their grievances.

Cllr. Fallon says that if Mercosur could be amended to allow only whole carcass be imported rather than cut beef it would lessen its’impact.
