Rosalie families downbeat after independent review

Families of residents at the Rosalie unit in Castlerea say they are sceptical after last week’s independent review of their care plans.

Dr Jim Anderson, a consultant specialist in psychiatry of later life, travelled from Northern Ireland last week and met residents, family representatives or advocates to discuss their care needs.

The HSE commissioned the independent review after concerns from family members that it was pursuing a policy to close the centre, contrary to the wishes of residents and their families.

It took place last week, with some family members given too short a time frame to attend the meeting.

Liam Walsh, whose mother, Breda, lives in the centre, met Mr Anderson, and says they disagreed on a number of points.

Liam also says that to his knowledge, advocates provided for residents who did not have family present, were not effective in that role.
