An environmental charity is congratulating a Roscommon Festival Committee on the cancellation of a planned fund-raising balloon race.
Friends of the Irish Environment say they along with many other environmental groups across the world have long campaigned to have balloon releases banned and wrote to the Rooskey Heritage Festival Committee urging them to cancel a balloon race.
The race would have seen balloons sold for €5 euro each and then released on the last evening of the festival with the balloon recorded as travelling the further being the winner of the main prize.
The festival committee announced the cancellation of the event in recent days, and Tony Lowes from the environmental group says they are very happy with the decision.
He says the balloons can travel long distances and can pose a hazard for several kinds of wildlife.
